What you need

  • Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx or other Garmin mapping GPS that use microSD cards.
  • 2 GB microSD card
    • 1 GB microSD card is not big enough
    • Larger than 2 GB microSD won't work at all
    • 2 GB microSD cards are now less than $20 from Amazon.com

Download the GMAPSUPP.IMG file

  1. On your computer, open a file browser window and create a folder labeled Garmin.
  2. Download the 1.03 GB 'GMAPSUPP.IMG' file via FTP.
  3. Be sure to use the 'Save' file option and NOT 'Open' file option.
  4. Save the file in the recently created Garmin folder.
  5. The following table lists the estimated download time.

Method: Using Card Reader

Step 1: Copy the file to microSD card
  1. Place microSD card into card reader.
  2. On your computer, open a file browser window and select the card reader (it might be assigned a new disk letter labeled "Removable disk").
  3. On your computer, open a file browser window and select the Garmin folder [assume this has been previously downloaded, and has GMAPSUPP.IMG in it].
  4. Drag the Garmin folder to the card reader window.
  5. The transfer should take about 4 minutes.
  6. Install microSD card into Garmin GPS device.



Outline of instructions for installing maps using Garmin USB driver. Assumes a folder Garmin containing GMAPSUPP.IMG has already been downloaded to one's local computer.

Method: Using the GPS in its USB Mode

Step 1: Confirm installation of USB driver on 60CSx or similar Garmin GPS
  1. Connect your GPS to your computer using its USB cable.
  2. On your GPS
  3. Main Menu
  4. Setup
  5. Interface
  6. It should say "USB Mass Storage" at the bottom. If it does not, the USB driver is not installed. If it does, skip to Step 3.

Step 2: Install USB driver
  1. Download the USB installer from the Garmin website http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591.
  2. Launch and follow instructions on the installer.
  3. If it cannot find grmnusb.sys then point it to the directory where it is located, for example 'C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers' or 'C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers\I386'.
  4. Go back to Step 1 to confirm installation of USB driver.

Step 3: Transfer the file
  1. On your GPS, scroll down to "USB Mass Storage" and select it.
  2. On your computer, open a file browser window and select the Garmin GPS device (it might be assigned a new disk letter labeled "Removable disk").
  3. On your computer, open a file browser window and select the Garmin folder [assume this has been previously downloaded, and has GMAPSUPP.IMG in it].
  4. Drag the Garmin folder to the Garmin GPS device window.
  5. The transfer should take about 1 hour.
  6. Close the software connection from your computer to the Garmin GPS device using "unplug or eject hardware".
